SWOT ANALYSIS

SWOT ANALYSIS

“SWOT analysis is a framework used to evaluate a company’s competitive position by identifying its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.” -Investopedia

SWOT analysis is a useful tool often applied in organizations to set marketing and business strategies.

It identifies the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of a company. However, SWOT analysis can be used for other purposes as well. It can also be employed in vocational guidance and coaching. For instance, you can use it when you are searching for a job and want to clarify your strengths, weaknesses, job opportunities, and obstacles in finding a job.

Let’s assume you are looking for a job. Just fill in the boxes of the SWOT analysis model. Below you will find a model with questions provided as guidelines.

Strengths

What skills do you have?

What do you think you do better than anyone else?

What are the strong points of your personality?

Weaknesses

What skills do you lack?

What knowledge should you improve?

What negative personality traits do you have? (anxious, fearful, quick to anger)

What vulnerabilities do you have? (health, finance, relationship)

Opportunities

What are the jobs which require your skill set?

What are the easiest jobs to find on the basis of your skill set, work experience, and education?

Are there any courses you can attend to increase your chances of getting a job?

Do you know anyone who can be a mentor?

Are there public aids that promote employment contracts for your category?

What influential contacts do you have?

Threats

What obstacles or difficulties might you face while looking for a job?

Do you lack the required education for the job of interest?

Do you lack work experience for the job of interest?

Is your location a problem?

Are your household duties an obstacle?

Do you lack useful contacts?

What self-limiting beliefs hold you back?

To recap, if you are looking for a job identify your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Clarify them for yourself first and this will help you write an effective resume and cover letter, as well as manage a job interview with self-confidence.

Remember to emphasize your strengths during a job interview, in your resume, and in your cover letter. In the meantime, work on your weaknesses, and keep developing skills and a strong character.
